SIE designed and installed pylons on the National Mall to remind people to visit www.si.edu for the latest information about the status of our museums, safety guidelines, and digital resources.

A poster sign illustrates “Why Masks Matter”. First row shows two silhouetted persons with face coverings worn correctly, covering the nose and mouth fully. Face coverings that cover both the nose and mouth help trap virus particles and slow their spread. Second row shows the silhouetted persons with face coverings worn incorrectly, just below the nose. Face coverings worn incorrectly do not provide protection. Third row shows two silhouetted persons with no face coverings at all. Every time we breathe, we release droplets into the air. These droplets can carry tiny virus particles that can infect people who breathe them in.

During the pandemic, SIE worked with scientists, health care workers, and other
experts to create a sign explaining “Why Masks Matter.”
