Internships Internships are 10-week-long opportunities for college students or recent graduates to gain professional experience. Smithsonian Exhibits accepts internship applications for each of our units in the spring, summer, winter, and fall. Please use the Smithsonian Online Academic Appointment system (SOLAA) to apply for an internship with Smithsonian Exhibits. The summer application deadline is Feb. 15 of each year. Due to a high volume of interest, only fully completed applications submitted through SOLAA before Feb. 15 will be considered for the summer program. For more information on the individual departments and their internship requirements click here. Please tailor application materials to your desired department within Smithsonian Exhibits.
Volunteers Whether you are looking to gain field experience or are just interested in how we create what’s on display at Smithsonian museums, we welcome ready hands! Our volunteers range in age and can work for any of our units, but we ask that each volunteer commit to at least eight hours per week for three months. Our volunteer opportunities are posted through the Smithsonian Behind-the-Scenes Volunteer Program. To apply, please complete an application for one of the current projects, and indicate your related experience. If selected, we will arrange an interview and a background check. We hope to see you wearing an SI badge soon!
